Kolkata Metropolitan Area West Bengal is the third largest economy in India after Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. The
service sector is the largest contributor to the gross domestic product of the state, contributing 55.59% of the state domestic product compared to 25.92% from agriculture and 18.49% from industry.
There are a number of Intelligent Parks being set up in the state which is now the centre of action for IT and ITeS companies. With more and more software companies moving into Kolkata for software development and BPO operations to drive down costs, several private entrepreneurs and realtors have entered the fray. In the industrially backward district of Bankura, 7 major industrial projects are coming up. Six of these are in the iron and steel industry and the other is a cement unit. In Purulia, another industrially backward district, 5 major projects are under construction. The State is perhaps one of the few states in India with surplus power. The signing of South Asian Free Trade Area (SAFTA) agreement on 2006 would provide opportunities as well as challenges to West Bengal, one of the border states in India. |
